Dog Back Brace/FAQ

What types of dogs wear a WiggleLess dog back brace and how does it help?

Whether you have an overweight dog that needs extra support as you help him nutritionally, an elderly dog with an aching back, a dog diagnosed with IVDD related back problems, or an overly active dog who would benefit from the support of a back brace — WiggleLess® vet-recommended and patented back brace is designed to stabilize the spinal column, curtail twisting, relieve stress, and provide comfortable, firm, back support for dogs.

My dog is unsure…how do I best introduce WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace?

WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace is made of durable, lightweight, breathable, mesh for comfort and long-lasting use. Just as dogs come in different shapes and sizes, they all have different personalities. For some anything new comes with anxiety. In ALL cases, we suggest you introduce your dog GRADUALLY to WiggleLess®. Have PATIENCE and PRAISE your dog, especially if your dog has never worn a back support brace or garment before. Calmly place  WiggleLess® on your dog, perhaps offering a treat before, during or after wear. Whether your dog is wearing a WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace for protection or prevention it is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure a COMFORTABLE  fit at all times.

My dog is at the “tail end” of the adjustment size of WiggleLess®. Do you recommend the next size up?

If, for example, your dog is a SOLID 20″ in girth (the measuring tape pulled snug but not too tight),  and WiggleLess® size small is 17-20″ we recommend you get the next size up. The weight of your dog can be helpful as well. We also offer an additional “Xstrip” if your dog benefits  from the LENGTH of a certain size and simply needs a little more GIRTH/CHEST room.  The Xstrip is a 4″ wide strip of velcro that you attach to the edge of the brace. If you have any questions or concerns about which size or length to get for your dog please contact us so that we can best assist you at #1-888-680-6799.

How long should my dog wear a WiggleLess each day?

We suggest you introduce your dog gradually to WiggleLess, up to an hour at a time. Some dogs may require an adjustment period but it won’t take long to know how well your dog is responding to the firm support. Once you know the fit is right and that your dog is comfortable it can be worn for longer periods. It is not necessary to have your dog wear it at nighttime while sleeping unless your veterinarian recommends it. What is most important is your dog’s comfort while wearing the brace. It should be snug but not too tight in all positions. There should be no movements obstructed.

If you are using WiggleLess for PREVENTION we suggest having your dog wear it during the most active times in her day and while taking a walk—using a harness OVER the brace so there is no strain on the back or neck. You can also his collar. Your dog’s comfort is everything!

Will WiggleLess prevent my dog from jumping up on furniture?

No movements should be obstructed when your dog wears a WiggleLess dog back brace. A dog can walk, run, jump, sit, nap, and be a dog. However, MANY WiggleLess customers report their dogs respond to the firm support by NOT jumping up on furniture (we don’t really know what goes on in their little minds, do we?) Whether your dog does or does not jump up on furniture is determined by their  unique personality and how they respond to the firm support.

My dog has sensitive skin. Will the brace irritate it?

Most dogs do not have any problems with the mesh material. However if your dog has sensitive skin we suggest your dog wears a comfortable, breathable layer of cotton between the brace and the skin. We offer the WiggleLess Comfort Shirt as an option. https://wiggleless.com/wiggleless-comfort-shirt/

My dog is paralyzed in the hind legs and is unable to use them. Will a WiggleLess® help my dog regain mobility?

Unfortunately no. WiggleLess® is designed to offer comfortable back support and stability but will not “cure” any neurological issues or paralysis. Talk with your veterinarian. The GOOD news is that a dog may continue to live a healthy, vital life with the use of a cart with wheels. We highly recommend eddieswheels.com for their high quality craftsmanship and longstanding reputation. Owners Ed and Leslie Grinnell have been living with dogs with disabilities for 20 years.  Their own dogs, together with the hundreds of disabled dogs whom we have personally measured and fitted in their carts each year, have been their inspiration.  “Our dogs have taught us how to meet the challenges of providing our disabled soul companions with the equipment and the care they need to lead a dog’s life.”

My dog is afraid of the sound of Velcro ripping. What should I do?

Some dogs are afraid of the sound of velcro ripping apart. You can start by opening the brace in another room, out of earshot. You can make a game out of it and sound excited when opening the brace up. If you want to remove the brace from your dog simply sandwich your fingers between the velcro and slide your hand slowly through the two velcro layers to open it and prevent fearful sounds. The more your dog realizes the sound of the velcro is nothing to be afraid of, the easier it will become. Make it fun and joyful!

Will my dog get hot in a WiggleLess?

Black absorbs heat — and WiggleLess is constructed of firm black mesh. In hot climates and summer weather it is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure your dog stays cool when wearing a WiggleLess. With or without a WiggleLess dog back brace your dog should never be left exposed outside in the hot sun.  Always provide plenty of shade and cool, fresh water. Never, ever leave your dog in a hot car!

Is there a leash attachment to the WiggleLess?

No. We suggest having your dog wear a harness OVER the brace while walking so there is no neck or back strain. We offer the Sporn Non-Pull Harness on our Store Page and there are many harnesses available elsewhere.

My dog has hip dysplasia. Would WiggleLess® help offer support?

While all breeds of dogs can develop hip dysplasia, it is the larger breeds (German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Otterhounds, Neapolitan Mastiffs, St. Bernards, Bloodhounds, Newfoundlands, Catahoula Hounds, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Rottweilers, Norwegian Elkhounds, Mastiffs, Chows, Old English Sheepdogs) that are most likely to suffer, simply because they weigh more. Because the problem is rooted in genetics, it tends to occur when one or both of a dog’s parents was also dysplastic. We recommend helpemup.com for dogs diagnosed with hip dysplasia. It is a complete shoulder and hip harness system that literally “lifts” the lives of aging or recovering dogs! By placing a pair of handles where you can quickly reach them, this unique dog harness allows you to lend support at any time. The pain it minimizes may very well be your own! WiggleLess also carries Gingerlead. The GingerLead® is a soft, padded belly sling with a leash & handle designed to help dogs recovering from knee, hip or back injuries, dogs with debilitating conditions and dogs who have weak hind legs when walking. It’s ideal for disabled dogs needing some assistance with their balance and/or mobility, as well as dogs suffering from arthritis. http://wiggleless.com/store/gingerlead/    .

My Veterinarian says my dog is a chondrodystrophic breed. What does that mean?

“Chondrodystrophy” is a disorder of cartilage formation. “Cartilage” is a specialized, tough, grisly type of connective tissue that essentially provides a model for bone development and growth.

Chondrodystrophic breeds of dogs are predisposed to skeletal deformities related to dwarfism. In most cases (but not always) they have long spines, short, thick legs, bowed legs and deviated paws.  Chondrodystrophic breeds include, but are not limited to: Dachshund, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Bulldog, Pug, Bassett Hound, Toy and Miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Pekingese, American Cocker Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Corgi and Scottish Terrier.

Are there uses for WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace other than prevention and support for back problems?

Yes! WiggleLess® has added benefits:

Depending on the area of the body that requires healing, WiggleLess®  Dog Back Brace may be worn as a dog cone alternative. Our Doxie, Henry, wore his Wiggleless® as a dog cone alternative after a lump was surgically removed from his tail resulting in over 15 stitches. He was sent home from the vet with medication and instructions “not to irritate the surgery site”. Wearing his WiggleLess®  as a dog cone alternative prevented him from licking, scratching, and/or biting his tail and allowed the medication to work beautifully. He was much more comfortable wearing his WiggleLess® than wearing an awkward, uncomfortable, cone around his neck!

WiggleLess® may also be worn as a barrier to skin irritations, infections or hot spots on the back of your dog and/or around the torso. If your vet has prescribed medications for the skin, a WiggleLess® may provide additional support in the process of healing.

WiggleLess® may also be worn to assist with reducing stress. We have found the wrap style of WiggleLess® over the spine may calm and comfort your dog much like swaddling a baby—offering a feeling of confidence and security. In Chinese Medicine, the Urinary Bladder line on the back is one of the most powerful meridians. It is the longest meridian and the Back Shu or transporting points are located on the back of either side of the spine. These points go directly to each of the organs, and directly impact the emotions.

How do I wash and dry my WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace and remove hair from the Velcro hooks?

  • Clean your WiggleLess® with a clean, damp sponge (machine washing is not recommended). Hang dry.
  • Tweezers pluck hair and debris from velcro and a short vacuum hose will suck it up.
  • When fitting your dog, lay WiggleLess® on flat, smooth surface other than carpet (to avoid sticking to velcro).

It’s that easy!!

Can my dog wear his/her WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace every day/all day or should I take it off from time to time?

If you suspect your dog has a back injury  SEE YOUR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY to discuss every option for the optimal care and support of your dog.

When used as directed, the WiggleLess® vet-recommended and patented, back brace is designed to help stabilize the spinal column, curtail twisting, relieve stress, and provide comfortable, firm, back support for dogs. My dogs wear their WiggleLess® back support braces a part of each day when they are active outside and when we go for a walk. When they are inside and napping during the day or when they are sleeping at night, they do not wear their back support braces. What’s most important is that you feel your dog is comfortable in a WiggleLess®. It should be snug but not too tight and it should not prevent dogs from “doing their business.”  As a dog owner, your care, kindness and compassion “dials” you in to your dogs needs.

Can you guarantee a WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace will fit my dog?

We wish we could. However, the sizes and shapes of every dog breed and mix of breeds vary so greatly that we cannot make that claim. Once you receive your WiggleLess® dog back brace, you will know right away if the fit is good for your dog. If you check the WiggleLess® size chart and find your dog fits within the range of sizes we currently have for our dog back support braces, it is most likely a WiggleLess® will fit your dog. If you are not happy with the fit you may return it in clean, like new condition within fourteen days for a full refund of the purchase price or exchange it for another size. There is a $10 re-stocking fee for all returned braces. Dirty or damaged merchandise is non-refundable.

Does wearing a WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace allow my male dog to go to the bathroom?

WiggleLess® must NOT cover up your dogs private parts. WiggleLess® is a UNISEX design to allow your male or female dog to “do their business” without ANY obstruction. Your dog MUST be comfortable and able to move fully and freely while being supported in a WiggleLess® back support brace. Care and kindness are required from the dog owner.

How long is a WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace going to last?

The longevity of your WiggleLess® is directly related to the care and cleaning you give it and the amount of daily wear and tear by your dog. Keep velcro “hook” and “loop” clean with either a slicker brush, tweezers, and a vacuum hose. Use a clean, damp sponge on the mesh to wipe away dirt.

My dog has a very broad chest and a narrow waist. Will a WiggleLess fit?

You can angle the brace closed so it is more snug at the hind end and open at the chest. Make sure your dog is comfortable in all positions and the belly is not too tight when sitting. Also, there’s an easy way to alter WiggleLess to fit your dog with a broad chest and a narrow waist! Click Here for More Information
