Where this idea comes from:

Many people, Vets included, think the idea behind a back brace is to stop ALL motion. If that were true, a weaker back would be true. If you were to stop all motion, the muscle would atrophy from disuse, becoming smaller. Fortunately, that's NOT what we're trying to do with bracing.

What's really happening:

The purpose of the brace is to keep the spine in a generally good position, allowing the inflammation from the disease to subside. It still allows some motion inside the brace, so the muscles can contract within their normal range of motion, while limiting large, gross motions that got the dog into trouble in the first place.

In the case of IVDD, inflammation causes swelling that tightens the hole around the nerve root exiting the spine. By limiting the large motion, the inflammation can be calmed, thus opening the space and reducing the pinching on the nerve, which is causing much of the pain.

In DM, the muscles are already weakening due to the progressive nature of the disease. That causes these large swaying motions when they walk. They look like a drunken sailor. Those large motions require much more contraction to control. This overfatigues the muscles. This is important to understand because we need to fatigue muscles to make them stronger, but if we overfatigue them, they actually get weaker. So the brace helps keep the spine in the "normal range of motion" for those muscles. That way, though they are getting weaker from the disease process, it is slowed because we are limiting how fatigued they get.

Anything, lifting, carrying, etc, can cause more pain to a dog with back issues, if you are not aware of how you are doing it.

Being aware of the dog's response is important, but sometimes their non-verbal signs are misread.

In general, if the spine is held in a more "normal" position when wearing a brace. It will relieve pain as the inflammation subsides.

That said, dogs can be weird at first fitting of the brace.

A dog stopping and staring at you like, "What are you doing?" isn't necessarily an indication of pain. Even lying down and refusing to move falls into this category. They don't understand.

Dogs do this because they are getting a lot of proprioceptive feedback from the brace that they have never had before, and aren't sure what to do with it. Basically, the brace is telling all their senses a lot of information about where their body is that they normally don't have.

That's why we recommend a break-in schedule for the dogs that freeze. Put the brace on just before you feed them. Then their focus is on the food, and they slowly begin to figure out how to handle the new sensory information their brain is receiving. The next step would be to put it on during an activity they enjoy, such as going for a walk.

Because of the disease, their backs are often contorted because muscles contract to protect them from pain. Over time in the brace, the feedback allows the brain to trust the brace and relax the muscles, so the spine can be held in a more normal position. That's when you see the most pain relief. This may take a few days to a week to start seeing that change.

Diseases Back Braces Help

The braces help by providing firm yet forgiving support to hold the spine in a normal position. Depending on the disease, this can be helpful in different ways.

WiggleLess® is designed to offer comfortable back support and stability, but will not “cure” any neurological issues or paralysis.

Some paralysis is due to pinching in the spine, and a brace can help. But without knowing the true underlying reason for the paralysis, this is a hard question to answer. It's best to have a good conversation with a rehab vet if your dog is this far along.

Some customers have used a WiggleLess Brace while using a cart for added support.

WiggleLess doesn't help so much with hip issues. However, we carry Gingerlead, a soft, padded belly sling with a leash & handle designed to help dogs recovering from knee, hip, or back injuries, dogs with debilitating conditions, and dogs who have weak hind legs when walking. “Chondrodystrophy” is a disorder of cartilage formation. “Cartilage” is a specialized, tough, grisly type of connective tissue that essentially provides a model for bone development and growth.

Chondrodystrophic breeds of dogs are predisposed to skeletal deformities related to dwarfism. In most cases (but not always) they have long spines, short, thick legs, bowed legs and deviated paws. Chondrodystrophic breeds include, but are not limited to: Dachshund, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Bulldog, Pug, Bassett Hound, Toy and Miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Pekingese, American Cocker Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Corgi and Scottish Terrier.

Depending on the area of the body that requires healing, WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace may be worn as a dog cone alternative. Our Doxie, Henry, wore his Wiggleless® as a dog cone alternative after a lump was surgically removed from his tail resulting in over 15 stitches. He was sent home from the vet with medication and instructions “not to irritate the surgery site”. Yes! Think of the concept of the Thundershirt. A big squeeze calms the nervous system. That's what the brace is doing. This is an added perk of the brace!

Measuring And How To Use

First, deep breath. This is somewhat of a common occurrence. There is hope!

We can't predict which animals this happens to, but it's a hurdle that's fairly easy to overcome.

What's happening is the dog is getting a bunch of sensory feedback that they have never had and aren't sure what to do with it. They read your positive attitude and voice. If they sense you are scared, they will mirror that.

They need to learn what to do with the new information, so we need to tie it to positive things while simultaneously distracting them from the sensory information.

Start by putting the brace on just before they eat. While they are standing and eating, they won't be so distracted by the new feel.

Then put it on before something they like to do, like taking a walk. As soon as they get distracted by a squirrel. The brace becomes a non-issue.

Some dogs catch on in a few minutes, some take a few days to a week to feel comfortable. Your attitude plays a big role in how long it takes.

Ultimately, we want them to be wearing the brace when they are up and about. Different dogs are active at different times.

Initially, we suggest you introduce your dog gradually to WiggleLess. Some dogs may require an adjustment period but it won’t take long to know how well your dog is responding to the firm support.

Once your dog is comfortable wearing the brace it can be worn for longer periods.

Generally you can use it during times of activity and remove it when your dog is resting, your dog will enjoy a the break.

It is not necessary to have your dog wear it at nighttime while sleeping unless your veterinarian recommends it.

What is most important is your dog’s comfort while wearing the brace. It should be snug but not too tight in all positions. There should be no movements obstructed. Your dog’s comfort is everything!

No "normal" movements should be obstructed when your dog wear's a WiggleLess brace.

A dog can walk, run, jump, sit, nap, and be a dog.

However, many WiggleLess customers report their dogs respond to the firm support by not jumping. This is likely because they are getting new proprioceptive feedback from the brace (sense of body position).

They don't know what to do with this feedback so they are hesitatant. You may have to do some coaxing with treats, think of it as training them to do a new trick! They will just love that you are playing with them!!

If your dog has sensitive skin we suggest your dog wears a comfortable, breathable layer of cotton between the brace and the skin. We offer the WiggleLess Comfort Shirt as an option.

They could. We do use cool mesh design to minimize this and allow heat to escape to keep your dog happy and healthy

That said, in hot climates and summer temperatures it is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure your dog stays comfortable when wearing a WiggleLess. A dog should never be left exposed outside in the hot sun. Always provide plenty of shade, and cool, fresh water. Never, ever leave your dog in a hot car!

WiggleLess® Dog Back Brace is made of durable, lightweight, breathable materials. Clean your brace with a clean damp sponge or cloth and dry flat (machine washing not recommended). If needed, use vacuum wand and tweezers to suck up loose hairs and debris from velcro.

Yes, with a correct sized brace and proper adjustments the UNISEX design allows your male or female dog to “do their business” without ANY obstruction.

The brace should never be fitted so that it cover's up your dogs private parts. Your dog should be comfortable and able to move fully and freely while being supported with a WiggleLess Dog Back Brace.

The longevity of your WiggleLess is directly related to the care and cleaning you give it and the amount of daily wear and tear by your dog.

To maximize the life of the brace, keep velcro “hook” and “loop” clean with either a slicker brush, tweezers, and a vacuum hose. Use a clean, damp sponge on the mesh to wipe away dirt.
