Calling All Chemicals

Guest Blog by Arianne Ortiz

Chemicals are in just about everything that lines the shelves of some of our favorite go to places. Saturated with terms like “all natural,” “organic,” “eco-friendly,” and pretty earth-friendly labels that commit to, “never tested on animals,” the average consumer is misinformed. All of those terms have truth and can still be harmful to our environment, so what does this mean? It is vital to read all labels and know what the ingredients are and what harm they can have on ourselves and our furry family members.

Phthalates are commonly found in household products such as, air fresheners, laundry detergents, shampoos, soap, toilet paper, and perfumes; that’s just a few from a laundry list. Phthalates are known to cause birth defects, harm the reproductive system, and cause hormonal imbalance and cancer. How does this affect our furry family members? I don’t know about you but my pups and cats rub all over us, sleep in our beds, and enjoy “grooming” us as a way of saying, “I love you.” By doing this they are ingesting whatever is on our skin and clothes potentially putting their health at risk. By nature, our furry friends never complain about how they are feeling instead they want to please their human counterpart by always giving love and showing happiness. Hidden dangers are not seen until there is enough in their system they cannot hide it or in some cases too late.

By nature, our furry friends never complain about how they are feeling instead they want to please their human counterpart by always giving love and showing happiness. Hidden dangers are not seen until there is enough in their system they cannot hide it, or in some cases, it can be too late—and the symptoms reveal themselves.

Keep your family safe by using healthier alternatives for your household needs. Organic products with minimal ingredients and chemical-free are best when possible. Lemons have powerful antibacterial properties and are a great alternative to bleach and other chemical-based cleaning products for your bathroom and kitchen. Laundry detergents and fabric softeners are growing with all-natural labels yet still have an array of chemicals.

Next time you grab the detergent and fabric softener try baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice or borax. Lean on essential oils for fragrance enhancers and green plants to keep clean air in your home. Try these great affordable alternatives and your pets will thank you.
