Who doesn’t love a spa day? Pampering ourselves and feeling cleansed from head to toe, flushing out toxins and releasing anxiety, thus emerging renewed and revitalized. Wouldn’t our precious pooches agree?

They love a good massage and even if they grudgingly go through the bath routine, they love the way they feel afterwards! So maybe it’s time to make their experience as relaxing and enjoyable as we do ours. Grooming the Zen-pup way.

Organization: Before you can relax and unwind, you need to get organized. Before a human ‘spa-day’, we get all of our lotions and potions in place. If you’re like me, you light candles… put on soothing music…get your towels in place and make sure you have everything you need to complete the full spa experience, including manicure and pedicure.

Now, get your pup ready for relaxation. Shampoos and ointments to pamper those paws; extra towels, scented spritz, cotton balls and ear cleaning supplies; (if you have experience), equipment to trim those faces and fannies. Hair dryer, brushes, and dental tools. Anything you need to clean and clip. Line it up in the order you will use it and move down the line as you go.

Step 1: Brushing – make this enjoyable by talking gently to them and reassuring them of good behavior, grasping any tangles and gently working the hairs apart. Be gentle and let them know they are in safe hands.

Step 2: Trimming– trim any fur between the toes and clip the nails. (Remember: if you aren’t confident in this area, be sure to visit a vet or local groomer). You can also trim the private areas and use a warm towel to wipe sensitive areas like the face and ears. Use a product designed for cleaning the ears and then plug with cotton.

Step 3: Bathing- Prefill the tub with warm water or turn on the hand held shower in advance. Speak softly while gently lowering your pup into the tub to rub-a-dub-dub. Place a coin-sized dollop of shampoo into your palm and gently massage from head to tail. Massage deeply and work suds into a rich lather, then rinse until water runs clear. Squeeze any excess water from the coat and lift your baby into his warm towel.

Step 4: Drying– Towel dry and use a hair dryer on cool setting until your baby is fluffy and happy. Take out the cotton wool from his ears and be sure to dry any little crevices.

Step 5: Brush and Spritz– use this time to truly pamper your pup. Put some doggie lotion on those padded toes; brush those teeth and fluff up that coat. Finish with a yummy scented spritz and voila, spa day complete.

So, go ahead… light some candles, put on some peaceful music, and have a few extra special treats on hand. Make it a spa experience they won’t forget! Next time, they will beg you for it.
