Osteoarthritis in Dogs

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is defined as the progressive and permanent long-term deterioration of the cartilage surrounding the joints. Arthritis is the medical term for inflammation of the joints, while osteoarthritis is the term referring to a form of chronic joint inflammation caused by deterioration of joint cartilage. Older dogs are at the highest risk.

Osteoarthritis in dogs is similar to how it affects humans. Limited mobility, inflammation and pain can affect daily living and fun activities.  Simple walks to the park or chasing a ball can be very bothersome for many dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.

Glucosamine is a natural amino acid found within the joints that are used to make glycosaminoglycans which are mechanisms in the cartilage.  Chondroitin is the sulfated glycosainoglycan that is also part of the cartilage system. These two components are often recommended by veterinarians to slow down the affects of osteoarthritis and help in the repairing and prevent further damage of the joints.  Many dog owners have seen a great improvement among their fury friends with the use of Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

These supplements are naturally found in the body and with age the production of glucosamine slows down causing upset with the joints.  Using Glucosamine helps to inhibit cartilage repair and slow the progression of degenerative joint disorders and arthritis.  Glucosamine supplements are also widely used amongst dog owners for treatment following surgery as well.
