Aromatherapy Bath For Dogs

doggie bath timeOne of my little guys hates baths!  Even though he’s been getting them since he was a puppy, he has still never gotten used to them.  He gets anxious and shakes the minute I put him in the kitchen sink for bath time.  If I run the faucet a little longer than normal, that is his queue to make a beeline for his safe place!

The other day, I was thinking is there anything I could do to make this experience more pleasurable, even just a little bit?  I looked into aroma therapy.

Indeed, canines can benefit from aroma therapy just like we humans do.  Using natural oils can ease all sorts of issues from anxiety, stress, depression to dry skin, motion sickness, flea & tick repellants.

After a little research, I discovered some great CALMING oils:

Lavender

Chamomile Roman

Sweet Orange, & Valerian.

So at bath time this week, I added a few drops of lavender to the water.  And guess what, I noticed a slight difference.  He did seem less shaky!  I think we both liked the results! The delicious scents are soothing and calming to both of us!

Alternatively, you can make your own calming spray by adding 4oz of water and 4 drops of lavender to a spray bottle, mist his coat lightly and gently rub to reduce anxiety.   If you want to give him a real treat, opt for a massage with oils.  Mix one drop of lavender (or other calming oil) with one drop of carrier oil like Castor, Sweet Almond, Olive, Sunflower, Jojoba etc.  Gently massage the mixture on his paw pads, ears or comb through his fur when you sense he is stressed or anxious.

Remember, 100% oil is best.  Verify and purchase essential oils only from reputable companies.  Dog’s noses are much more sensitive than ours and a little goes a long way!

As always, check with your Vet if you are unsure about anything discussed.

May you both enjoy your aromatherapy bath experience!
